^ “There are metaphoric factors in our language — and habits of thought and usage we acquire largely through exposure and emulation — which predispose us to attempt to define ourselves in terms of ideas or situations which have nothing in common with our nature or our desire. We cannot be defined in this way, and the attempt is offensive to our minds and souls.
This often takes the form of collapsing something very complex, into something unitary and easily manipulable. Interestingly, this is a fundamental principle of prosecution. An example came up recently in which a person in a complex situation felt pressured to ‘make a decision’. This in itself isn’t problematical, but the source of the pressure was a sense that it was ‘correct or appropriate’ to decide and act without further reflection.
When I examined the matter at hand, it was clear that there was a natural ‘breathing-like’ process at play. There was the active exploration of the new possibilities and necessities, and then there was a resting period where the present situation and the past were brought in and reflected upon. This natural rhythm comprises the learning cycle, and it is crucial to have the freedom to explore it during any kind of significant choice. We may not always have this luxury, but whether we do or not is not dependent upon some apparently compelling dogma that collapses a complex situation into a binary decision, but rather our active, moment-to-moment living sensing of the flow of change, meaning, value and identity at play in and all around us. It is not rules. It is our human hearts, minds, and souls with which we will ‘de-side’ and these are not amenable to such crude abstractions as pragmatism seems to demand.
It is too common an error, this urge to collapse something complex into something easy to indict or manipulate. This is often found inside the anxiety, terror, fear or disturbance felt by people who are facing a conflict that cannot be resolved by flattening the complexities into some pseudo-accusatory abstraction. Too often, this way of seeing becomes internalized so that an external critic is no longer required to initiate it: we, ourselves, collapse the complexity and accuse… ourselves or beloved others… in the name of something we imagine to be pragmatism, but which, on closer examination, turns out to be at least as ignorant as what it is critiquing and, in nearly every case, vastly more so.
A sophisticated ignorance is really more offensive than a simple one. Don’t you think?”

∞ “The nature of humanity is diversity in unification. All of our intelligences are born and emerge in from intimate unity of concern, life and action. Where this is lacking, our intelligences counterfeit and assault themselves. There are no universal metrics or standards for human beings; our nature is to fill every potential niche of our possible organism and awareness. The idea that there are universal “standards” or ‘norms’ is a linguistic confidence trick; our nature is diversity in unity. And when we can inhabit that nature, the result is otherwise impossible superfunction, intelligence, and prodigy.”

May your hearts be true and your holidays filled with love…
∞ Most of you have had at least one significant encounter with Mystery. Perhaps you saw something strange in the sky. Or in your mind. Or in the natural world. Something you felt was inexplicable.
Don’t fall for the common gambit. The purpose was not to teach you to ‘decide what that was’. The purpose was to introduce you to Mystery: that is, specifically, that which lies -=outside your explanations, models, theories and distinctions=-. If you fall for the trap of ‘deciding what that (probably) was’, you’ve traded the gold mine for the penny.
Keep the Mystery. It’s vastly more useful than your theories and descriptions.
∞ Treasure to those with eyes to see…
You have a set of senses that you are probably unaware of and do not understand. They depend, largely, upon what we call your ‘peripheral vision’. In order to learn about them, you must attend them closely consistently for a reasonable period of time (at least a few weeks).
One way to do this, is to limit your PV with a hood that encloses your face. You should be -=extremely careful about this experiment, and not pilot vehicles of any kind during it=-. Turn off your PV, or limit it, and watch what happens.
Essentially, your foveal (central) vision is highly linked to your representational consciousness. It sees distinct objects, and helps your mind to define and identify them. It is also ego-like, and ‘knows’ things based on rules. Your peripheral vision is nothing like this. It is like a ‘guardian angel’; it constantly rescues you, and rarely alerts you to these rescues, does not name the threats, takes no credit, hides like crazy, and, essentially, cannot be located to be praised. Its capacities are incredible. It does not have to identify threats to avoid them, and doesn’t need to announce them to you to rescue you from them.
It has saved your life over a million times by the time you are 10 years old. It does this all day long, without recognition, and without praise. If it stopped for recognition or praise, you’d be badly injured or dead. It has its own field of intelligence associated with it, and this intelligence is more like your dreaming than your thinking.
Now, what I want you to understand is this: it is your -peripheral intelligence- which is truly intelligent. It is powerful beyond anything known to your foveal intelligence, and your foveal intelligence may actually resent this. It is aware of the ‘genius ghost’ who lives in its own body, and constantly outperforms it. If it could, it would try to attack and kill its competitor… and that, of course, would kill you.
Discover and awaken your peripheral intelligence, and you will know a prodigy that will shock you to your core. It is far beyond the sum of human stories… and the associated intelligence is far older than our species… older, even than our world.
Nevermind nonsensical stories about gods, angels, demons and fairies. Discover what you’re actually carrying. It will shock you silly, over and over again, and you will never be able to exhaust or surpass its excellence. It is more interesting and alive and dynamic than the sum of human writings.
Listen closely: the word for your central vision? Foveal? It actually means -pitfall-. Understand?

∞ Although they think that they are thinking… that is not thinking they are doing… it is… well, it is something like the difference between the toilet and the dinner plate. If you confuse these, as you may imagine, you will not be eating ‘dinner’… but rather, the remains of »other people’s food moments. Most of what we think of as thinking is an assemblage of extremely crude and repetitious habits that aggressively compete to dominate our minds, and produce… rather than thought… naive compliance with methods that are toxic… and the defense or aggrandizement of these methods. This is a trap. Few adults escape it, and of those who do, fewer still get very far beyond this trap. But it is our nature and birthright to escape, and this, my friends… is one of my primary interests… and a crucial focus of my work. I want us to retrieve the possibilities of our nature from the desperate violations that our false cultures impose… in their place.
